Minnesota mandatory workplace notices poster

In October 2024, the State of Minnesota released three mandatory labor law notice updates applicable to all employers within the state. The revised set of notices includes the Minnesota minimum wage poster, the sample Earned Sick and Safe Time notification, and the newly required notice regarding Employer-Sponsored Meetings. Minnesota employers should post the revised versions of the Earned Sick and Safety Time sample notice and the Employer Sponsored Meetings notice as soon as possible. Employers must display the revised 2025 Minimum Wage poster on or before January 1st, 2025.

2025 Minnesota Minimum Wage

The 2025 Minnesota minimum wage rate of $11.13 per hour takes effect on January 1st. The revised poster, published and enforced by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, prominently displays the new rate and a revised 2025 training wage of $9.08 for employees under the age of 20 during their first 90 days of consecutive employment.

In 2024, the state enforced two different minimum wages for small and large employers. Smaller employers had to comply with a minimum rate of $8.85 per hour, while larger employers with $500,000 in annual sales or more had to pay their workers a minimum of $10.85 per hour.

Minnesota is one of several states that have adjusted their minimum wage to reflect inflation. The $11.13 per hour rate reflects the calculated cost-of-living adjustment and now applies to all state employers, regardless of size.

Employer-Sponsored Meetings in Minnesota

The newly released Employer Sponsored Meetings poster informs Minnesota employees that they are protected from unlawful retaliation for refusing to attend any political or religious meetings conducted in the workplace by the employer. Prohibited retaliation includes any disciplinary action, including termination.

Minnesota employers also cannot threaten any adverse action for failure to attend such meetings or as a means to promote attendance. The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry’s required poster also makes it clear that these laws do not prohibit or limit an employer’s right to free speech.

Minnesota Earned Sick and Safe Time

Under Minnesota statutes § 181.9447, subdivision 9, employees working in the state must accrue at least one hour of state-required Minnesota earned sick and safe time for every 30 hours they work. Employees can use this accumulated time for personal medical care and evaluation, to care for a family member, to cover an absence related to domestic abuse or stalking, or for school and workplace closures caused by weather or public emergencies.

Employers in Minnesota must provide written notice to all of their employees regarding their rights under this law. The state recently revised its sample notice, which employers can customize, post, and distribute to their employees as required. The updated sample notice clarifies eligibility, payment rate, and application to other PTO.

Employer Takeaways

Minnesota employers must take immediate action to comply with these revised mandatory posting and notification requirements under Minnesota labor law. Failure to comply with state and federal labor laws can result in fines, penalties, and lawsuit judgments. The revised 2025 Minnesota Minimum Wage Notice must be posted by January 1st, 2025. Covered employers must also increase the wage rates of employees whose current rate of pay will fall below the new 2025 minimums.

Meanwhile, affected employers should display the updated Employer Sponsored Meetings poster conspicuously in the workplace and implement the revised sample Earned Sick and Safe Time, either in distributed or posted format, to meet mandatory employee notice requirements.
